Week 8

During this session I'll be floating to give help with technical stuff on the wikis. It's the time to ask if you're having problems!

Marks

The marking criteria are as laid out in the project brief but I'll flesh them out a bit more here.

Each person's final mark is made up of a component for the group wiki and a component for the individual blogs. The split is 50:50.

Blogs

A good blog will have plenty of postings which reflect on what we've covered and your understanding of how it applies to what you've seen during your research. It will certainly have the "Good Vs Bad" exercise with a commentary on why each selection fits those criteria; "Anyone can see it's rubbish!" simply doesn't work - explain why a site is good and another is bad. At the end of the course you should also post a piece reflecting on the course as a whole. Consider what we've covered and what it means to you, look back through your blog to see whether you've changed your views or learnt something new. Also consider what you learnt from being part of a group and how the group dynamics worked out. You should also mention what you'd do differently, on this type of group project, next time.

Wikis

We've discussed the wikis at length so here I'll simply try to tie together what I'm expecting. The wiki should be a series of linked pages which discuss your area of study. This will be related to online identity or virtual communities or a combination of the two. Each wiki must have:

An introduction explaining the area of study

A page which details who worked on the project and a link to their blog - preferably with photos of group members or a group photo

References to any resources quoted

Remember your audience - the wiki should be written in English rather than hyper-corrected "academicese". If you think that something supports Rheingold's then say that rather than trying to find longer words to make it look better. You're writing for your peers. Don't try to mangle something you've seen or found out to make it fit a theory - if it does that's fine but if it doesn't and you still think it worthy of inclusion then use it and say why. However you assemble the written work, individuals write their own or someone writes all of it, check for typos - nothing ruins credibility as much as something riddled with speling errors.

Use images on the wiki to break up the text and add colour - include details of where you took the image from if it's not one you've taken.

In closing....

Don't worry. The work I've seen so far is strong - the group wikis are looking good and most of the blogs are of a very high standard. If you aren't sure if that includes your blog then ask me.

Hannah's blog
<ins>Fluidity of identities and the decline of tradition
We have seen various ways in which popular ideas about the self in society have changed, so that identity is today seen as more fluid and transformable than ever before. Twenty or thirty years ago, analysis of popular media often told researchers that mainstream culture was a backwards-looking force, resistant to social change and trying to push people back into traditional categories. Today, it seems more appropriate to emphasise that, within limits, the mass media is a force for change. The traditional view of a woman as a housewife or low-status worker has been kick-boxed out of the picture by the feisty, successful 'girl power' icons. Meanwhile the masculine ideals of absolute toughness, stubborn self-reliance and emotional silence have been shaken by a new emphasis on men's emotions, need for advice, and the problems of masculinity. Although gender categories have not been shattered, these alternative ideas and images have at least created space for a greater diversity of identities.
Modern media has little time or respect for tradition. The whole idea of traditions comes to seem quite strange. Why would we want to do the same as previous generations? What's so great about the past? Popular media fosters the desire to create new modes of life - within the context of capitalism. Whether one is happy with capitalism, or seeks its demise, it must surely be considered good if modern media is encouraging the overthrow of traditions which kept people within limiting compartments.
The knowing construction of identity
Not only is there more room for a greater variety of identities to emerge; it is also the case that the construction of identity has become a known requirement. Modern Western societies do not leave individuals in any doubt that they need to make choices of identity and lifestyle - even if their preferred options are rather obvious and conventional ones, or are limited due to lack of financial (or cultural) resources. As the sociologist Ulrich Beck has noted, in late modern societies everyone wants to 'live their own life', but this is, at the same time, 'an experimental life' (2002: 26). Since the social world is no longer confident in its traditions, every approach to life, whether seemingly radical or conventional, is somewhat risky and needs to be worked upon - nurtured, considered and maintained, or amended. Because 'inherited recipes for living and role stereotypes fail to function' (ibid), we have to make our own new patterns of being, and - although this is not one of Beck's emphases - it seems clear that the media plays an important role here. Magazines, bought on one level for a quick fix of glossy entertainment, promote self-confidence (even if they partly undermine it, for some readers, at the same time) and provide information about sex, relationships and lifestyles which can be put to a variety of uses. Television programmes, pop songs, adverts, movies and the internet all also provide numerous kinds of 'guidance' - not necessarily in the obvious form of advice-giving, but in the myriad suggestions of ways of living which they imply. We lap up this material because the social construction of identity today is the knowing social construction of identity. Your life is your project - there is no escape. The media provides some of the tools which can be used in this work. Like many toolkits, however, it contains some good utensils and some useless ones; some that might give beauty to the project, and some that might spoil it. (People find different uses for different materials, too, so one person's 'bad' tool might be a gift to another.)
Media, Gender and identity- David Guantlet, 2002</ins>

But what exactly are they? What can and can’t they do? How does one get started? Could virtual worlds really be the next big thing for business, social networking, education and entertainment?
They certainly don't replace real life communication, but they do offer richer opportunities for people getting to know each other and collaborate than the web, ping-pong email, faceless phone calls and uncomfortable video conferencing.
Businesses are using virtual worlds to promote their brands, practice for dangerous situations and allow people to experience products before they exist; Asperger’s sufferers are being helped; tennis buffs can experience Andy Roddick’s 140 mph serve; surgeons rehearse operations; and science teaching is being enhanced.
So even if some suggest that virtual worlds are a silly irrelevance and a quirky alternative to true life, the reality is different.
The speaker will share live demonstrations of companies and individuals already using virtual worlds as digital venues in which they work, learn and play. By addressing the four questions posed above, he hopes that those in the Mountbatten audience unfamiliar with “walking digital dogs” and such-like will wish to explore further.
Dinner isn't free but I'd guess you can dive out after the lecture.</ins>
Each of these links goes to personal "play" pages.

I wanted to contribute some reflections on what we did today. There are a couple of reasons - firstly because I thought it might help if I tried to demonstrate something about how I use the reflective process and also to help me to "catch up" with where I think we are as we reach the midway point.

Something which struck me last week and today was the way in which we were able to bash around some ideas without people becoming entrenched; we've been able to look at different perspectives as a group without falling into the trap of thinking there are "right" or "wrong" answers. One of my objectives is to try to show the difficulties we face when engaging with something as big and complex as online communities and it's good to see that most people are open to new ideas and prepared to take issues away and explore them. I also think that part of what I’m working with the group for is to try to initiate ideas – it’s to try to get us looking at things from different perspectives.

I’ve spent some time thinking about the discussion about communities and I’m still not sure I’ve nailed it. I’m not sure what the differences might be between a “group” and a “community”. Intuitively I feel that I’m a member of any number of groups but that not all of those groups are also communities. This leads me to think about how I might characterise the differences between groups and communities. If I think about a group of people who teach at LCC I’m a member but I only know three other members of that group and much as I get on well with them we’re not a community. Does community involve investment? I might categorise another group as those with an OU degree but I don’t know many of them, I do know some and we form a community because we share ideas and support – we give and receive something within our … community? Might our gifts, comments and sharing views, form currency in a gift economy? Is community membership based on what we give to and take from the community? Does membership of any community depend on active participation? I’ve been thinking about “informal” communities rather than those with elected leaders – if we think about people who write blogs as a community are those who are thought of as “leaders” the ones who contribute most? Is this our “gift economy”? The way I’m visualising this community is as a set of circles.

<!--%5Bif gte vml 1%5D><v:oval id="_x0000_s1026" style='position:absolute;

The circle in the middle represents the main group of the community, the leaders for want of a better term. The outer rings show different levels of membership – possibly determined by skill or activity or level of contribution. Members might move between different levels based on whatever the “currency” of the community might be – if this community is about working on a piece of open source software those at the very centre might be the people able to determine the direction of the development while those further out are working on a specific piece of the whole and the quality of their work might move them closer to the centre (or further away!). Those on the outer level might not participate much, might simply be observers, might be new and just joining, etc. Does that make sense?

Back to Monday’s session - I think the extended middle section, the "break" offered time for groups to coalesce and discuss the project within a slightly more “formal” setting, i.e. as part of the session. I certainly think we should use this space again.

I’m getting a great deal out of the Monday sessions and learning all the time. Thanks guys!

This book divides neatly into two elements, the original text written in 1993 and additional chapters added for this MIT republication. The 1993 section is written unashamedly as a defence of those who enjoy an online life in the face of detractors who thought that "only socially crippled adolescents would use the Internet to communicate".

As a participant since 1985 in The WELL, an online community established in the San Francisco area, Rheingold paints a vibrant and enthusiastic picture of a life online. He describes the "barn raising" events of any community, the births and deaths, with the authentic voice of someone who has spent enough time in this "third place", the place where Oldenburg proposed in The Great Good Place that people join for conviviality. His narrative about these events is moving and will resonate for anyone who has experience of how these events can affect virtual communities. This early section deals with the growth of the "gift economies" that made the WELL, and other virtual communities, viable. He also explains the techniques used to attract valuable participants, such as providing free accounts to local journalists.

Using this as a backdrop Rheingold then discusses the technologies and innovators that enabled the birth and growth of virtual communities - from Englebart's work on HCI in the 1950s, through the development of ARPA, the work at Xerox PARC, and UUCP from Bell Laboratories - he shows how the components slotted together.

The horizons are then drawn wider and we look at communities in Japan (COARA), France (based on the MINITEL system). Again Rheingold looks at the people involved in the processes. We meet the "Online Activists" using the Internet as a democratising tool. People like Dave Hughes, a retired Army Officer, who travelled with a laptop and evangelised about the Net. Hughes helped towns by advocating and practising online activism using bulletin boards to pass local council planning decisions to a wider audience. He used this technique to expose inefficient and ineffective processes in his local authority in Colorado Springs and showed others how they could make an impact locally by using bulletin boards.

In addition to a wider landscape we also see the strata - the MOOs and MUDs, FIDO and Usenet, IRC and BBS. This was a time when communities used their own, often proprietary, software and the only links would be through e-mail where members of the communities could talk to members of other communities to exchange ideas and invite new members. Nor are the less desirable elements ignored, flame wars and Energy Creatures, those contributors who deliberately post to generate any response: positive or negative, and who 'feed' on that response are dealt with and highlighted. Rheingold is excellent at getting beyond the online persona, showing us something of the people behind the screen.

In Chapter 10, "Disinfomocracy", Rheingold starts to look at some of the wider issues about using the Net. Questions about who owns digital information and whether ISPs can control the information are still with us today.

The 1993 section of the book closes as the first graphical browsers are becoming available. The inherent one-to-many communication of the WELL and other communities is soon to change as the nascent Web starts its amazing growth. In the updated section Rheingold brings the story of the WELL, the people and politics up to date and also discusses his own early failures to bring commercial community building to the Web. He looks at differing views of an online community; can it really be viewed as a community in its fullest sense? Rheingold's final paragraph sums this up:

"The battle for the shape of the Net is joined. Part of the battle is a battle of dollars and power, but the great lever is still understanding - if enough people can understand what is happening, I still believe we can have an influence. Whether we live in a Panoptic or Democratic Net ten years from now depends, in no small measure, on what you and I know and do now."

Readers of this book will be better equipped to understand how the Net and the Web can be used to join people together and used actively. Readers will also have a social history document that shows a personal perspective of an earlier, more innocent, Internet and finally they will have an excellent history of the birth and growth of the Internet. Rheingold is still able to remind us that the core of the Internet is people, the people who use the tools, the people who build the tools and the people who would control the tools.

ABSTRACT

Linden Lab is the producer of Second Life, an online world with a

growing population of subscribers (or "residents"); currently, the

community has well over 140,000 residents from 91 countries. By

providing residents with robust building and scripting tools, Linden

Lab enables them to create a vast array of in-world objects,

installations and programs. Since its early stages, Linden Lab has

allowed its residents to retain full IP rights over their own

creations, thereby insuring that their contributions to the community

remain truly their own.

http://www.clt.uts.edu.au/Scholarship/Reflective.journal.htm - My favourite because I think it sets the context well. It's from the Australian "Scholarship in Teaching" project
http://www.philseflsupport.com/reflective_journals.htm - I like this one too. It's maintained by a PHd student at Aston and is aimed at EFL teachers taking PG Diplomas or Masters
<ins>http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=7560535&dopt=Citation</ins>
